Does skin firming lotion work? It works extremely well if it has proven, effective ingredients, in the right amounts.

That's a big "if," however.

NOW Foods Jojoba Oil

A skin firming lotion can make your skin firmer, tighter, healthier and younger-looking -- or do nothing but provide some moisturizing. Most lotions and creams don't get it right. Here is what makes the difference.

Does Skin Firming Lotion Work? Learn Why Most Do Not, and What's the Big Difference

The problem with nearly every skin firming lotion or cream is that it does one of two things wrong. Either it doesn't contain effective ingredients, capable of firming, nourishing and rebuilding the skin; or else it doesn't contain enough of those ingredients. It's that simple.

Here's what happens in products called "skin firming" or "body firming" lotion or cream. They are intended for the whole body -- that's why they aren't called face creams or facial lotion. So they must cover a lot of skin -- your body is a lot more area than your face. The special problem areas are often the tummy, the thighs, the entire upper arm, the hips and behind.

That's a large area of skin, in other words. And a skin firming lotion must either skimp on the effective ingredients, or contain enough of those ingredients to raise the price. (The best, most effective ingredients are fairly expensive.) The resulting skin firming lotion is never going to be among the low-priced products on the market. That's if it's going to work!

Skimping on ingredients is the norm in skin firming lotions. You need to use a lot, and even then they usually don't do much firming. The effective ingredients are missing, or there just isn't enough.

Now, any skin care product is a combination, with ingredients that should complement one another. Some key ingredients, however, have proven in clinical trials that they really work. Here are some:

-- Coenzyme Q10 combined with natural vitamin E. The issue here is, CoQ10 is in many lotions, but usually not enough of it, and almost never in a form that is easily absorbed by the skin. The most absorbent form is CoQ10 in a tiny particle size called a "nano-emulsion." The CoQ10 proven effective in clinical trials is a combination of 5 percent CoQ10 with 10 percent natural vitamin E.

What does it do? CoQ10 and vitamin E together are a great antioxidant combination in the skin. In the nano-emulsion they penetrate the skin deeply and boost the skin's production of collagen and elastin, both essential skin proteins.

-- A form of powdered honey called Active Manuka Honey. Bees make it from the flower of some (not all) manuka bushes found in New Zealand. Scientists at New Zealand's Waikato University discovered the honey contains exceptionally high levels of enzymes. It is antibacterial, stimulates the immune system, and stimulates skin cell growth.

-- Vitamin B5, or D-panthenol, helps to repair and rebuild damaged skin tissue.

-- Some natural oils are especially effective in skin care, including jojoba oil and grapeseed oil

What to avoid

Mineral oil is the most common ingredient of all in skin care, especially in products calling themselves skin firming lotions. I told you the reason earlier: these products need to cover a lot of skin on your body, and mineral oil is one of the cheapest skin care ingredients available. Unfortunately, it does nothing for skin firming. It strips the skin of natural oils and gradually makes it drier than ever. It clogs the pores. It can make the skin more photo-sensitive.

Mineral oil is also called liquid paraffin, petrolatum and petroleum jelly. By any name, it's a bad-news ingredient.

See my website for more on ingredients that make a skin firming lotion work.
