Environmental Issues in Japan

As an industrialized nation Japan must deal with tough environmental issues. Japan is the world's leading importer of exhaustible energy resources and the world's fifth largest emitter of greenhouse gases. It is a signatory of the Kyoto Protocol and also the country which hosted the conference in 1997. Under the Kyoto Protocol treaty Japan is obligated to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions to a level 6% lower than its 1990 levels. In addition, Japan must take other steps to curb global climate change.

Nuclear power provides about 35% of Japan's electricity. There are currently 63 nuclear power plants operating in Japan making it the second largest user of nuclear power in the world. All of these power plants produce waste which much be dealt with. Especially dangerous is HLW, or high-level radioactive waste. To address this issue the Rokkasho Reprocessing Plant was built in Ibaraki, Japan. There are many opponents to the opening of the plant, including Greenpeace, which feel the plant poses danger to surrounding residents. The opponents also feel Japan should be investing money in cleaner and safer renewable energy sources.

Thuja

Japan is one of the world's largest consumers of fish. However, due to depleting ocean stocks the annual catch has been rapidly decreasing. Japan is the world's third largest consumer of fish, following China and Peru. Numbers of the prized bluefin tuna, known as the diamond of the sea in Japan, are dwindling causing fishing quotas to be reduced. Japan has been facing international pressure from environmentalists to curb its consumption of bluefin tuna.

Environmental Issues in Japan

Japan's whaling for "research purposes" has also attracted a great deal of negative international attention. The whale meat harvested from the research campaigns is sold in supermarkets and restaurants in Japan. Many people feel the Japanese JARPA research program is just an obvious cover for commercial whaling. The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, lead by Captain Paul Watson, uses controversial tactics to stop Japanese whaling vessels in the Antarctic. Two common methods used by Sea Shepherd are throwing rotten butter and powerful stink bombs at the Japanese whaling vessels.

Renewable energy accounts for only 1.3% of Japan's total energy production. Despite being technologically advanced and heavily dependent on oil imports, the country has set an unambitious goal of 1.6% by 2014. Currently Japan ranks 14th in the world for wind-power installations. With a lack of government policies to promote the use of renewable energies it is unlikely Japan will become a global leader in this area as many once thought.

Environmental News Content - How to Write Articles on Environmental Issues For the General Public

One of the most popular types of articles these days are those that deal with green environmentalism. These subtopics such as alternative energy, recycling, and hybrid automobiles are also quite popular. Amazingly enough, these types of articles get almost as much play as Hollywood popularity contest articles about people like Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, or Janet Jackson.

This really shouldn't surprise anyone because the environmental movement has been going on for decades now. And it has reached critical mass. Everyone is talking about these topics. Folks are considering buying a hybrid car, like a SmartCar or a Chevy Volt in the future. During the last presidential election we had quite a bit of talk about alternative energy and it was a point of national discussion.

Thuja

Everybody seems to want to do their part, and the number of people who are separating their trash for recycling has increased by 200% in just the last five years. This provides a great opportunity for those who write articles online, or for article authors who sell their works to newspapers or major magazines. Having written hundreds of articles on these topics, I've learned a lot from the e-mail feedback I get from my readers.

Environmental News Content - How to Write Articles on Environmental Issues For the General Public

So, I'd like to recommend if you're going to write environmental articles for the general public that you discuss how each of us can do our individual part to help make a cleaner environment. And offer helpful tips for saving energy, recycling, and provide a little philosophical thought on these issues. If you will do those things I'm sure your articles will get read as much as mine have. Please consider all this.

Avigal Henna Copper (Reddish Gold) 17oz Detail

In 1972, henna was re-introduced to the consumer with amazing success. What had once been discarded as a primitive hair coloring process was once again a viable force in the beauty field. Fear over chemical side effects as well as a growing interest in healthy products helped to push henna into the limelight again, but the true leader of what became known as the "Henna Revolution" was and still is AVIGAL HENNA. New shrubs of the Lawsonia plant were discovered and developed, which gave life to different colors and shade gradations. AVIGAL HENNA took these shrubs and created a whole new look -- natural, vibrant highlights for every type of hair -- permed, bleached, tinted or virgin. The basic difference between Avigal Henna and other hennas on the market is that Avigal Henna is 100% pure henna made from the finest quality henna available. Avigal Henna is the safest and most effective way to color and condition the hair. Simply add hot water to the henna powder, mix well and apply. Follow the time specified on the enclosed instruction sheet. If you use an external heat source, you can cut the processing time by 30%. PERMED HAIR? You can apply Avigal Henna over permed hair without worry. In fact, Avigal Henna will lock in the perm, making the curl last longer. If you want to perm after a henna application, perm as usual and then reapply henna since the chemicals in the perm will strip the henna color from the hair. GREY HAIR? Avigal Henna has developed 6 shades for single process use on grey hair: Natural, Hazel, Topaz, Champagne, Strawberry Blonde and Red. Each may be applied directly onto grey or graying hair for highlights ranging from extraordinary shine to rich red. Grey hair can also be darkened by the double process method.

Leyland Cypress Sunlight Requirements

Thuja Green Giant and Leyland Cypress trees will tolerate partial shade. We want to discuss the overhead Canopy, shade on one side, what is the impact of being in the South vs North can effect a shady planting site. We also will cover the symptoms of too much shade, pruning the canopy shade trees and also recommend a good substitute for shady location privacy screens.

A straight overhead canopy of shade is not the best situation for Thuja Green Giant or Leyland Cypress trees. The least desirable situation is an overhead evergreen or pine canopy, because the trees under an evergreen canopy don't even get sunlight during winter. If that is your application, don't plant there! Sometimes it cannot be avoided. For example, in Long Island and in the Hamptons area, some neighborhood have rules about what can be cut and are very strict about cutting native trees to replace with anything not native to the area. Even so, I am not recommending planting Leyland Cypress or Thuja Green Giant trees under a canopy. I have planted these varieties under a canopy that was very high and still it effects the trees.

Thuja

Northern locations tolerate shade better than southern locations if from decidious trees! If the trees bring the shade are deciduous tress, at least after those canopy trees shed their leaves, the Thuja Green Giant trees will get full sun all winter. This is more beneficial from NY and northward than in southern states, because they shed about five weeks earlier in fall than southern trees and don't green up until one month later than southern deciduous trees. On Long Island, Thuja Green Giant or Leyland Cypress trees planted under a partial canopy of scrub oaks may get full sun for seven months of winter before leaves re-appear, whereas southern states with a similar situation may only provide five months of full sun. Shade on one side of your row is normally fine, because your Leyland Cypress trees will still get the powerful straight overhead sunlight. Thuja Green Giant or Leyland Cypress trees can grow three feet per year if fertilized properly, so remember if one side of your row has shade from slower growing species, The Thuja Green Giants or Leyland Cypress will "beat out" the shading trees in most cases and eliminate the problem.

Leyland Cypress Sunlight Requirements

The main symptom of too much shade on Leyland Cypress and Thuja Green Gants is the trees thin out. At first planting if Ball and Burlap field grown trees, they will be thick at first. Over the years, shady applications will take their toll and they will thin out somewhat. The second sympom is slow growth rate. As I stated above, thinning is not caused by shade to one side, lack of straight overhead sunlight is the problem.

Providing light by pruning the offending shade trees is a great idea! If you cut limbs off an evergreen tree that is shading your Leyland Leyland Cypress row, those limbs will not grow back so it should be a one-time effort. If your arborists trim deciduous trees like Oaks, Maple trees, it is more likely to require trimming again at a later date. If the limbs on deciduous trees are cut all the way back to the trunk, on the side that shades your Leyland Cypress trees you may solve it completely. The advice here is do the tree surgery overhead before you plant the privacy hedge beneath. The arborist will probably be able to let the limbs to fall if it is done before installing the Thuja Green Giant row, but if you wait till after planting, the arborist will likely have to rope the branches down to avoid damage on your privacy screen below.

A good substite variety is Nellie Stevens Hollies for shady applications. Also remember, when you plant in a mature woodland, the trees nearby not only steal sunlight but will have established root systems that will compete with your new plants for moisture.
